Each episode of Killjoys builds upon the past, layering and layering themes repeated throughout the season. The finale of Killjoys was no different. “Escape Velocity” finally answered some of our lingering questions about Khlyen and Red 17, in ways foreshadowed by previous episodes. Yet, we are still left wanting. We need more episodes to learn about the Killjoys universe – not just to uncover one more mystery about Dutch’s past – but also because we care about what is going to happen to all of the characters. Killjoys has done a fantastic job of fleshing out the characters’ relationships with one another, and revealing the motivations behind their actions. So this post will focus on the growth of our characters, the ABC building blocks of the entire Killjoys series. (Caution – Spoilers Ahead!) (more…)

Killjoys S1E8 Review: Come the Rain

S1E7 Kiss Kiss, Bye Bye || S1E8 Come the Rain || S1E9 Enemy Khlyen

Compared to the dramatic revelations of the last episode, Killjoys “Come the Rain” takes a slower approach, as the characters come to terms with their changing relationships to one another. Dutch and D’Avin go through Jenga-inspired trust exercises, while Johnny and Pawter Simms conduct trust exercises of their own – all while a deadly poisonous storm brews across Westerley. In this episode of Killjoys, the team goes on a rip-roaring ride through Utopia – a mecca of extreme tech, drugs, and sex set adrift in space. Dutch gets a new haircut, a new outfit, and a new love interest. But how long can utopia really last? Especially when the team meets the real Dr. Pim Jaeger? (Caution – Spoilers Ahead!)  (more…)

Killjoys S1E5 Review: A Glitch in the System

S1E4 The Vessel || S1E5 A Glitch in the System || S1E6 One Blood

Every space-faring series has an obligatory abandoned spacecraft episode, and Killjoys is no exception. In episode 5 of Killjoys, Dutch and the Jaqobis brothers stage a salvage operation of a ship, stranded and seemingly crewless in the middle of an asteroid field. They gleefully go after the free cargo – almost absentmindedly – as if there were no mortal dangers around each and every corner. Of course, as all avid scifi watchers know, spacecraft with “no life signs” are the scourge of mankind. They are filled with man-eating space zombie-like Reavers, aliens that explode out of your chest, and deadly viruses that cause lust-filled hysteria (TNG anyone?).

During Dutch, D’Avin and Johnny’s pretty harrowing salvage mission, we learn a lot about the insidiousness of The Company. We also learn more about the nature of D’Avin’s PTSD symptoms, and the doctor behind it all. (Caution – Spoilers Ahead!)

Killjoys S1E3 Review: The Harvest

S1E2 The Sugar Point Run || S1E3 The Harvest || S1E4 The Vessel

The third episode of Killjoys, “The Harvest”, is the best yet of the season. Featuring witty and pithy dialogue, “The Harvest” gives both subtle and not so subtle hints to the mysterious backstories of lead characters Dutch and D’Avin Jaqobis. We learn that Dutch may not have always been the back-alley RAC agent of Westerly — she knows too much about the upper crust of Qresh society. We also learn that D’Avin’s PTSD-inducing war past may not be all that it seems. To pay respect to the writing of this episode, which is *much* better than the dialogue featured in “Sugar Point Run”, let’s take a look at some of the best quotes from “The Harvest” and see what they reveal of the politics of the Quad.
